Kedarkantha Trek: Complete Guide (Route, Cost, Best Time)

Why Choose Kedarkantha?

Kedarkantha is more than just a trek; it's an emotion for many trekkers. Standing tall at 12,500 ft in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, it offers one of the best summit climbs accessible to beginners. The name literally translates to "Throat of Lord Shiva".

Best Time to Visit

Winter (December - April): This is the peak season. The entire trail is covered in snow, offering a magical Narnia-like experience. The summit climb in snow is the highlight.

Spring/Summer (May - June): The snow melts, revealing lush green meadows and clear views of the peaks. A great time for those who want to avoid the extreme cold.

The Route

The trek usually starts from Sankri village, a cultural hub in itself.

  • Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sankri (Start point).
  • Day 2: Trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (A frozen lake in winter).
  • Day 3: Trek to Kedarkantha Base Camp.
  • Day 4: Summit Day! Climb to the peak and descend to Hargaon.
  • Day 5: Return to Sankri.
  • Day 6: Drive back to Dehradun.

Difficulty Level

Graded as Easy to Moderate. The main challenge is the summit day which involves a steep ascent, possibly in deep snow. However, with basic fitness and determination, it is very doable.
